The Functions of the Bible(1)
In order to be balanced Christians who experience proper spiritual growth, we must have the invisible Spirit within, and the Scriptures, the Bible, without. But where did the Bible originate from? 2 Tim. 3:16 tells us that the Bible is God’s breath. The Bible did not originate from man’s thoughts or man’s mind, but from the breathing out of God. In 1 Pet.2:21, it says: ‘For no prophecy was ever borne by the will of man, but men spoke from God while being borne by the Holy Spirit.’ This means men received inspiration from God while under the power of the Holy Spirit to speak God’s word.
The first function of the Bible is to testify concerning the Lord Jesus (John 5:39). On the one hand, the Lord is the subject and content of the Bible, on the other the Bible is the explanation and expression of the Lord. The Bible makes it possible for men to know and comprehend the Lord.
Another function is that the Bible makes men wise unto salvation (2 Tim.3:15). It reveals how God saves men in Christ and how men may be saved by faith.
In 1 Pet.1:23, it says: ‘Having been regenerated not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible, through the living and abiding word of God.’ When we receive the word of the Scriptures into us through faith, it functions as a seed of life to sow God’s life into us. Thus we are born again; regenerated.
Praise the Lord for the rich inheritance we enjoy in the Scriptures!
